As part of the online seminar on the topic “Filming Using Gadgets,” the Ukrainian Institute for Advanced Training of Television, Radio Broadcasting, and Press Workers held a training lecture titled “Cinematographic Lighting: Laws and Rules” for regional media professionals.
Victor Kush, a top-category lecturer at the Ukrainian Institute for Advanced Training of Television, Radio Broadcasting and Press Workers, a cinematographer for film and television, a laureate of the Taras Shevchenko State Prize, with over 40 years of teaching experience in cinematography, introduced the audience to lighting techniques using examples from works by prominent Ukrainian and international artists. These techniques for working with light and optics are also effective in creating photo and video frames.
The subject of shooting, whether with a smartphone or photo and video cameras, requires appropriate lighting for high-quality imagery. To properly assess and determine the amount and type of light needed, including its color quality, the person must understand the laws and rules of lighting. These were precisely the insights and experiences shared by Viktor Kush during the seminar. He demonstrated lighting setup schemes on a film set, showcased various effects achievable by changing the positions of lighting devices, and discussed exposure metering using a smartphone.
