USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MEDIA WORK

UNKNOWN – HARD-WORKING – SNEAKY…

All this is about it, about AI, but it’s not a competitor of journalists!

The Ukrainian Institute for Advanced Training of Television, Radio Broadcasting and Press Workers with the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) by the assistance of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine launched the training course “Using artificial intelligence in media work” for regional media workers.

The special training course was organized based on the recommendations of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy, the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine.

In his welcoming speech to the listeners, the NUJU President, Honored Journalist of Ukraine Sergiy Tomilenko noted that the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine closely cooperates with the UTRPI in the direction of improving the qualifications of journalists and their acquisition of new skills.

– Today, the tools of artificial intelligence have already begun to be used in the work of the media, and it is important that this process takes place within the framework of compliance with journalistic standards and rules of information security, – noted Sergiy Tomilenko. – I am grateful to our colleague Glib Golovchenko and the Ukrainian Institute for Advanced Training of Television, Radio Broadcasting and Press Workers for paying attention to this topic and organizing a special course for journalists.

– Modern technologies are an integral part of the media industry. Therefore, the rapid development of artificial intelligence tools could not help but affect the work of journalists as well, – Director of the Ukrainian Institute for Advanced Training of Television, Radio Broadcasting and Press Workers (UTRPI), Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Secretary of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, Honored Journalist of Ukraine Glib Golovchenko emphasized in his introductory speech to the audience. – However, as many of us have already noticed, today in the conditions of the information war, Russia uses artificial intelligence to create fakes and information leaks. How not to fall for fakes created with the help of artificial intelligence, and not to become a misinformer for your readers, viewers, listeners? How to use AI for fact-checking and how can artificial intelligence tools help in the creation of audiovisual content? All this, with an emphasis on information security, will be discussed during training of the new course created by the Ukrainian Institute for Advanced Training of Television, Radio Broadcasting and Press Workers, – Glib Golovchenko emphasized. He also noted that the UTRPI took into account the great demand for a training course on the use of AI in media work and opened registration for classes that will be held in May.

Denys Zamriy, a top-level teacher (head) of the department of modern information technologies and media literacy in the media sphere of the Ukrainian Institute for Advanced Training of Television, Radio Broadcasting and Press Workers, presented the basic principles of artificial intelligence with extensive detailed support to the audience. The media trainer familiarized the audience with the possibilities of artificial intelligence for working with texts, provided an overview of the main AI services, showed in practice how to use generative artificial intelligence to receive texts, in particular, presentations, media plans, and perform fact-checking. At the same time, it was noted that although AI is able to quickly learn, improve and master increasingly complex tasks, it can still be relied on as a tool for routine work. It will not replace creative workers.

The NUJU First Secretary, a member of the Commission on Journalistic Ethics, Lina Kushch, gave an overview of the recommendations of the Commission on Journalistic Ethics and the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting to the listeners of the training course of the UTRPI. She noted that the NUJU focuses on the observance of journalistic standards as an important component when using artificial intelligence. After all, the editors are responsible for all content in their media and its veracity. Lina Kushch drew special attention to the fact that the use of AI in the course of preparing a publication can inadvertently open the source of information, lead to leakage and further use of unconfirmed facts. It is the potential dangers that lie in wait for AI users that prompted the European Parliament to adopt the European Act on Artificial Intelligence. The European Federation of Journalists, of which NUJU is a member, is also governed by the Paris Charter on the principles of using AI. Based on the recommendations of the Commission on Journalistic Ethics, the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine suggested that journalists follow recommendations specially developed for the media.

The continuation of this training course will take place on April 25.

Moderator of the training course is a teacher of the highest category of the department of press on electronic mass media of the UTRPI, honored journalist of Ukraine Svitlana Pysarenko.
